the konmari method

the japanese art of tidying up
Cover of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, our guide to soulful and simple home and life organizing!

Question: how do you want to live?

If you're reading this, you may have heard about Japanese decluttering guru Marie Kondo, whose book and Netflix series have made her crazy-popular (her book has sold 7 million copies around the world!)

The "life-changing" part of the KonMari™ method goes way deeper than figuring out how to manage and organize "stuff." You start with a foundational question: "How do I want to live?"

When you commit to your own "transformational tidying" you're saying "yes" to intentionally creating the life you want. But it starts super-simple. We heap your clothes on the bed and start joy-checking!

tidying is just a tool. living the life you want is the destination.
- marie kondo

the konmari process reconnects you to your heart - it is rooted in japanese values of mindfulness, gratitude, respect and care

Sachiko is a master-level KonMari™ consultant, one of the first KonMari™ consultants in Canada and among the first master-level consultants in the world. It has been her privilege to accompany clients from all walks of life in their transformational tidying. Don't worry if you fear you might have the worst clutter ever... everyone feels that way.

If we work together to mindfully consider your things and re-set your space and your life, you will learn how to:

  • Cultivate listening to your heart (not your head).
  • Focus on the positive: what to keep (what fits the vision)
  • With appreciation, acknowledge the role things have played in your life, thank them — with no guilt —and pay them forward for others to use now.
  • Assign a true “home” for everything that's truly useful or sparks joy.
  • Commit to treating everything you keep with care.

The goal isn't to become a stark minimalist (unless you want to). It's to be mindful about what you choose to have in your life — so you have a home that truly sparks joy, is uncluttered, spacious, feels good *and aligns with how you wish to live.*

After sorting is finished, when we know exactly what is left that needs a home, if you wish, Sachiko can help you organize your space so it is both functional and aesthetically pleasing
 — so you can live the way you imagine and maintain your space going forward.

How long does it take?
The reality: it's going to take some time. If you've watched the Netflix show, you need to realize that they don't show any of the *behind-the-scenes* decluttering. How long it will take depends on you, the size of your home, the number of things you have + your time, energy and budget.

Doing 1 - 2 sessions per month with time for specific homework tasks completed in between, it takes most clients 3 - 6+ months to complete all categories. It's important to have a plan that will ensure you can commit the necessary personal and $ resources to complete your tidying. Stopping mid-way or before the end unfortunately usually results in sliding back to how things were before. This is a do-it-once and do-it-right process. It takes time to create sustainable change, and it is so-o-o worth it.
if it's the right time for you to do this, you'll feel a clear "yes" inside.

Sachiko came into my home with warmth, compassion and the complicity of a fairy godmother. She understood what I was going through. She gave me time to express what I was feeling above and beyond the objects that were weighing me down, letting me explain my desire to find my way, to become the person I wanted to become. At the heart of Sachiko's process, what impacted me the most was the absence of judgement and the freedom I experienced. Today I am a person who no longer accumulates things and I am giving myself permission to become the person I have always wanted to be."
